How do I waterproof a previously painted Tile Roof?
  • Wash the roof first. This is not only to clean off the dirt, but also to remove any algae growth and airborne pollution residue. Use a general purpose degreaser soap diluted with water. Don’t use any soap that contains ammoniac.
  • Check if the roof tiles are brittle and powdery. If the tiles are brittle the paint won’t stick for long. The tiles then need to be coated with a thinned-down coat of Paint Master Bonding Liquid. Paint Master Bonding Liquid needs to be thinned down to a ratio of 20L Bonding Liquid and 5L Turpentine. If the Bonding Liquid is not thinned-down enough it will also affect the adhesion of the paint. The Bonding Liquid should be thinned-down enough so that it does not leave a shiny surface. Leave the Bonding Liquid for 24 hours to dry.
  • Start now with waterproofing 2-3 coats of Paint Master Umbrella with built in fibre. Wait 3-4 hours between coats, thereafter two coats of Paint Master Roof Master can be applied. Wait 3-4 hours between coats
  • By applying the paint with a roof brush you get a thicker film thickness and a more durable finish.
  • Paint between 9 am and 4pm in summer and between 10am and 3pm in winter. Low temperatures and moisture as a result of dew and frost will impact on the performance of the paint

How do I clean my Kitchen and Bathroom walls before painting?

Firstly you need to clean the wall you want to paint. Use a cloth or duster to remove any dust or dirt that may be on the surface, as the dust will mix with your paint and create an uneven surface.

Thereafter, check whether these walls have mould. Mould needs to be removed by washing the mouldy areas with JIK or Sugar Soap. Leave the JIK or Sugar Soap for approximately 4 hours to ensure that it penetrates the mould. Wash the entire wall down with clean water.

  • Always ensure that your home is well ventilated to prevent mould from forming, especially Kitchens and Bathrooms.

Check for flaking or peeling paint. If your wall has loose paint on, adding another layer of paint onto an already peeling layer of paint, will not make the new layer of paint stick to your wall. First remove all the loose particles by sanding down with a sander or sand paper. These areas need to be filled with an All Purpose Crack Filler or replastered and then primed with Paint Master Universal Undercoat first before painting the top coat. If there are numerous patches on the wall, it would be beneficial to prime the entire wall to avoid patches or uneven areas.

If there are any cracks or holes in the wall, first fill these with an All Purpose Crack Filler. These filled areas need to be sanded once dry to ensure that these areas are even and can be painted with a Paint Master Universal Undercoat first before painting the top coat. If there are numerous patches on the wall, it would be beneficial to prime the entire wall to avoid patches or uneven areas.

Sheen refers to the shininess of the paint, ranging from no sheen to a high gloss finish. Paint Master offers products for all sheen types, such as:

  • Super M: Slight to no sheen finish – Water based (Suitable for Interior and Exterior uses)
  • Low Sheen: Slight sheen finish – Water based (Suitable for Interior and Exterior uses)

I am repainting my previously painted wall, why would the paint not cover after one or two coats?

The following could be the reason:

  • Incorrect roller used for the specific surface. When purchasing a paint brush or roller, read the directions on the label as this will direct you as to which area should be painted with that specific roller.
  • Certain rollers such as foam rollers roll a thinner coat of paint than other rollers.
  • The paint is not applied correctly: When painting with a roller, it is easy to roll the paint out too thinly. This will result in the coats not covering. This is called stretching the paint.
  • When repainting a dark coloured wall with a much lighter colour, you may need more than two or three coats of the lighter colour before the darker colour will cover. The use of a primer might be beneficial as this will reduce the number of top coats that will be required.

Do I need to apply a primer?

Interior Walls

Wipe your hand over the wall to see if there is a visible chalky residue on your hand. If there is a chalky residue you should
apply our solvent-based bonding liquid and allow to dry overnight. Should the wall you need to repaint not require replastering
or doesn’t have a chalky residue just follow the cleaning instructions – no primers needed. If a previously painted wall needs to
be replastered, then a Paint Master Water Based Plaster Primer will be required.

INTERIOR WALLS

If your wall is painted with a water-based paint and you want to repaint with an oil based paint, or vice versa, you need to apply Paint Master Universal Undercoat.

INTERIOR WALLS

When changing from a dark colour to a light colour, the use of a primer can be beneficial as this will reduce the number of top coats that will need to be applied.

EXTERIOR WALLS

Wipe your hand over the wall to see if there is a visible chalky residue on your hand. If there is a chalky residue you should apply our solvent-based bonding liquid and allow to dry overnight. If a previously painted wall needs to be replastered, then a Paint Master Water Based Plaster Primer will be required. Also remember to waterproof your windowsills, parapets, tops of boundary walls and plaster detail with our Umbrella – membrane free waterproofing product. This will improve the lifetime of the paint and needs to be maintained every 2 years

METAL

Check whether the surface is rusted. If so, apply Paint Master Rust Converter to the rusted area. Sand down the rusted area, wash down with water and ensure that the surface is rust free and dry. Prime with our Paintmaster Metal Primer and overcoat with our enamel, roof or PVA products. Our experience found that a water-based topcoat lasts longer than a solvent-based topcoat. On palisades it works better to use the Metal primer and overcoat with our Roof Master, Sheen, or Low Sheen.

CEILINGS

Previously painted ceilings generally don’t need a primer unless there are damp marks visible. Prime the damp marks with our Universal Undercoat, leave to cure for 12 hours and then apply 2 coats of Paint Master Hi Cover. We also have an anti-fungus ceiling paint to illuminate fungus growth in small bathrooms and shower areas. Wash the fungus with a JIK and water solution, allow to dry, apply our Universal Undercoat. Wait 12 hours and overcoat with our anti fungus Super M product.
